In November, in New York, Sydney had a Hebrew baby naming ceremony. Her Hebrew name is Hava Yardena which roughly translates to “river of life”. She was named after her great grandparents who passed away in 2009. Their names were Henrietta (Hendienta in Hebrew) and Irving (Yitzhak in Hebrew). It was a beautiful, short ceremony to welcome Sydney into the world and to introduce her to family and friends on the east coast.

In late December, Sydney traveled to Seattle to spend Christmas with the Wright side of her family. The trip was great. We had amazingly good weather for Seattle in December, we had a nice lineup of activities and visits planned, and Sydney added a whole new conversation topic and focus of our attention. Here are some photos!
I still have the routine of waking up early and taking care of Sydney from when she wakes up through 8:00 AM. While I certainly interact and take care of her at other times, this morning routine usually gives me two hours or so alone with my daughter.
The books tell us this stage of Sydney’s life should be fun, positive, and happy – for her and for us. And it is. She smiles quickly, is engaged with those around her, and is inquisitive about the world.
Here are three of my favorites moments with Sydney at 4.5 months, all of which make being a dad wonderful!
- Waking: Sydney wakes up in one of two ways: Either she is hungry and starts crying before she is really done sleeping or she wakes up naturally. The first is tough as her sleep gets cut short but she still doesn’t want to go back to her crib. The second is beautiful – I go upstairs as I see her moving around in the monitor and she awakes and opens her eyes, greeting me with a huge smile.
- Eating: Sydney is often a bit rambunctious when she bottle feeds, throwing her arms around and knocking the bottle as she tries to helpfully grab hold of it. Sometimes it gets to the point where I sing to her to distract her. She’ll then continue sucking while staring intently into my eyes from six inches away. If only we all listened to each other so attentively!
- Carrying: Sydney loves to be carried, as almost all infants do. When she is unhappy, unless she is starving, I can usually quickly calm her down by picking her up. She likes to be carried facing forward so she can see where we are going as I walk around the condo, downstairs to get the paper, or into the bathroom to look at the mirror. She also likes being on my shoulders. See the great photos of us below taken in the mirror.
I have to admit, I never thought I would use the term “daddy”. I am more of a “dad” than a “daddy” and will probably revert to that once Sydney starts talking. At the moment, though, “daddy” seems appropriate with an infant!
Wow… it’s AMAZING how quickly the months are zooming by. Our little angel is now four months old! She is now able to sit up (totally hunched over) on her own, she is able to roll from front to back and back to front, she is grabbing anything and everything and sticking it into her mouth, she is pushing buttons and turning objects on her toys, she loves grabbing her toes (happy baby yoga pose!) and she is a pro at lifting her head and neck up high at tummy time! At her four month doctor’s appointment, on December 4th (exactly four months old), Sydney weighed 14 pounds, 5 ounces (53%) and measured 25.25 inches (82%), so she is still average weight for her age, and a bit taller than most her age. Here are some recent photos:
Sydney LOVES noise! When I snap my fingers or clap my hands, I get a big smile out of her! It made sense that she would also love musical instruments… so while in New York, Sydney had the opportunity to make noise on a drum, on a guitar, and on a piano! Her grandparents in New York have lots of instruments in their house, including a piano and drums. And, Sydney’s cousin Elaine bought her a brand new Martin Guitar! It’s an amazing gift and we can’t wait for Elaine to teach her how to play.
Thursday, November 28th was the first and only time in our lifetime that Hanukkah happened to fall on the same day as Thanksgiving, thus Sydney got to celebrate her first Thanksgiving and her first Hanukkah on the same night. She had a great time with her family in New York!
In New York, Sydney finally met her potential future husband! Sydney is exactly three months and three days younger than he is. His name is Remi and his mom is Jill. Jill and I met when we were eight years old, at sleep away camp, in Maine, and we quickly became BFFs. It was fantastic for us to be pregnant at the same time, and now it’s even better to have babies so close in age! We look forward to many, many fun times ahead with both little ones!
