Every two years my family on my mom’s side gets together for a family reunion. We started this tradition in 2001 (I think) after perhaps 15 years of not regularly seeing each other. The family is about 22 members strong and most people come to the reunion each biennial.
This year Sydney and I joined the family July 27 – 30 at The Lodge at Oak Creek Ranch, a very nice vacation ranch in the foothills above San Luis Obispo, California. It was HOT in the area – over 100 degrees – and because of this we were somewhat limited in our outdoor activities. But the house was nice and it came with a large pool that was the center of attention. Two highlights of pool activity were:
Pool Volleyball: We had about 16 of us in the pool playing a game of pool volleyball. Our greater family is quite competitive and we clearly get that from my mom and her two sisters. All of us were diving for balls and arguing points!
Sydney Swimming: Sydney did not see the pool as a game for the adults but more the adults as a game for her. She swam from person to person with a determination that was impressive!
It takes a certain commitment to keep a family reunion going, especially because our family is located in Washington, Oregon, California, and now New York. I am proud of my family for doing so!
